Purpose and Format Overview
UPL is a team-based pickleball league designed to professionalize the pathway for elite amateur and emerging professional athletes. Each match features five games that test depth, strategy, endurance, lineup management, and competitive discipline.
- Games 1–3: Tiered doubles (A, B, C)
- Game 4: Doubles Dream Maker (six-player rotation doubles)
- Game 5: Singles Dream Breaker (six-player rotation singles)
UPL is built to be competitive, consistent, broadcast-ready, and professionally operated, with verified ratings and roster standards enforced through DUPR+ and league review.
Venue Standards and Match Sites
Approved Facilities Only (No Public Courts)
UPL matches must be played at approved home clubs, partner facilities, or designated league venues. Public courts are not permitted for official UPL matches.
Required Home Club and Camera System
Each team must designate an official home club meeting league standards. In some regions, multiple teams may share approved competitive sites depending on geography and team density.
- Private or commercial pickleball facility
- Sporfie camera system installed on a minimum of two (2) courts
- Cameras must be operational for match recording, live streaming when applicable, ratings verification, league review, and dispute enforcement
Player Eligibility
Verification Required (No Exceptions)
Every player must be verified by UPL and DUPR+ verified, with the official rating visible in league systems. If a player is not verified, they are not eligible to compete.
Open Play
- Any gender may play with any gender. Men's, women's, and mixed pairings are allowed.
- Players of any age may compete only if they meet event/division eligibility requirements and required waivers, including guardian waivers when applicable.
Player Development and Growth
UPL recognizes and supports athlete development throughout the season. Eligibility is based on verified ratings at season entry, official league approval, and roster compliance at the beginning of league participation. Athletes will not be penalized for rating growth earned through legitimate competition during the season. League officials reserve the right to review exceptional circumstances affecting competitive balance.
Skill Level and Rating Standards (DUPR+)
DUPR+ is the Official Rating Standard
UPL uses DUPR+ for rating verification, roster compliance, slot placement, and competitive integrity.
Mixed Ratings and Career High Ratings
UPL recognizes that DUPR systems continue evolving, including overall ratings, mixed ratings, and career high ratings. League officials may evaluate multiple verified rating metrics when determining slot placement, competitive balance, and roster compliance.
Competitive Integrity Standards
UPL reserves the right to review roster structures, player placement, and lineup configurations to prevent rating manipulation, intentional slot advantage, and competitive imbalance. All rulings made by league officials and/or the Rules Committee are final.
Roster Requirements (Semi-Pro Circuit)
Roster Size and Female Requirement
- Minimum roster: 6 verified players (must include at least 1 female)
- Maximum roster: 13 verified players
- Teams are strongly encouraged to maintain adequate gender and skill depth to avoid forfeits and maintain lineup compliance.
Roster Update — Effective Immediately
Based on league feedback from opening weekends, roster size has been increased to thirteen (13) players effective immediately. This adjustment is intended to improve substitution flexibility, reduce last-minute roster issues, and maintain match flow without league intervention.
Roster Depth Recommendation (Avoiding Forfeits)
Teams are strongly encouraged to maintain enough verified players to cover absences, required female participation, slot requirements, and injury replacement needs.
Roster Composition Guidance (Depth)
Teams should build roster depth across gender and skill levels while ensuring all roster members remain slot/rating compliant.
Junior Division
If a Junior division is offered in the same event structure, it may mirror this format; however, Junior eligibility/rating rules must follow the Junior Division addendum if published.
Official Match Lineup (Slot System)
To prevent stacking and protect competitive balance, each team's official match lineup is submitted using six (6) required slots: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.
Slot Rating Bands (Semi-Pro Focus)
| Slot Tier | Rating Band | Description |
|---|---|---|
| A Slots | 5.25 – 5.49 | Top Tier Semi-Pro |
| B Slots | 5.00 – 5.24 | Core Semi-Pro |
| C Slots | 4.00 – 4.99 | Elite Amateur / Development |
Slot Compliance Rule
A player may not be assigned to a slot if their DUPR+ rating falls outside that slot's rating band, except as permitted under Sections 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5.
A-Slot Availability Exception (Best Next Players)
If a team does not have an eligible A-slot athlete available for a match, the team may fill A1/A2 with its best next available eligible players, provided that:
- Player eligibility is based on verified ratings and roster status at the beginning of the season. Athletes who improve beyond original entry-level thresholds during the season remain eligible to continue competing unless otherwise determined by UPL officials.
- The team must assign players in a way that reflects competitive fairness. Highest-rated available players must occupy the highest available slots (A before B before C).
- This exception may not be used to create a slot advantage, including keeping a higher-rated player in B/C while placing a lower-rated player in A.
Female Athlete Mixed Rating Flexibility Rule
To support competitive balance and provide additional flexibility for female athletes, UPL recognizes the use of DUPR Mixed Ratings under the following conditions. If a female athlete qualifies for A-slot participation under overall DUPR+ and has a DUPR Mixed Rating that falls within the B-slot range (5.00–5.24), that athlete may be assigned to a B-slot matchup for that match.
- The highest-rated eligible male athlete available must move into the A-slot position.
- All other slot compliance and roster rules remain in effect.
- Athlete eligibility will continue to be based on verified season-entry roster standards and approved league participation status.
C-Slot Developmental Team Rule
For teams primarily composed of C-level athletes (4.00–4.99 DUPR+), mixed ratings will not be used for slot determination. Instead, UPL may evaluate overall DUPR+ rating or verified Career High DUPR rating, whichever is higher. If a player's verified Career High rating exceeds their current overall rating, UPL may require that athlete to compete in the higher applicable slot.
Career High Verification Requirement
Any team requesting lineup consideration outside the standard slot structure must submit verification for review no later than Thursday at 11:59 PM prior to that weekend's matches. Teams must provide evidence of current overall DUPR+ rating, DUPR Mixed Rating when applicable, and/or verified Career High rating. UPL officials may approve or deny requests, require additional verification, and enforce slot placement based on competitive integrity standards.

- Rally scoring to 21, win by 1
- Points are awarded on every rally, regardless of which team serves.

Timeouts
- Each team receives one (1) timeout per game.
- Failure to be ready within the 2-minute interval between games may result in forfeiting that timeout or other enforcement at official discretion.
Court Monitors
- Court monitors ensure matches remain on schedule.
- No extra warm-ups are permitted between games.
Team and Match Scoring
Match Points
- Each game won = 1 match point.
- A match contains 5 possible match points (0–5).
Match Winner
- The team winning 3 or more games wins the match.
- All five games are still played unless officials determine otherwise.
Match-Day Submission and Roster Lock
Lineup Submission
Team Owners or approved representatives must submit the match lineup by slot (A1–C2), rotation orders required for Games 4 and 5, and any required verification confirmations per event procedure.
Roster Lock (30 Minutes)
Each team's roster and match lineup must be finalized no later than 30 minutes prior to match start. After roster lock, no additions, swaps, or substitutions may be made for that match, except as allowed under approved substitution and injury replacement procedures.
Substitutions (Verified + No Advantage)
Approval Required
All substitutions must be DUPR+ verified and approved by UPL officials before the substitute competes.
No Rating Advantage / No Slot Advantage
Substitutions are allowed only if the substitute does not create a rating advantage under league standards and remains compliant with the slot system and rating bands.
Prohibited Players
Non-rostered or unverified players are strictly prohibited from competing in any UPL match. No exceptions.
Injury Sub-Out (Match Only) + Return Next Match
- If a player is injured during a match, that player may be substituted out for the remainder of that match.
- The injured player may not re-enter that same match once substituted out.
- The injured player may return in the next match if medically able to compete and not otherwise restricted by UPL officials.
- All injury substitutions must remain compliant with verification, roster lock, and slot/rating rules.
Injury Replacements (Long-Term Injury Standard)
Short-Term Injury
Short-term injuries are handled under Section 11.4.
Long-Term Injury (Inactive + Replacement)
If an injury is expected to extend longer than one (1) week and/or is projected to extend for multiple months, the team must notify UPL officials and request an injury replacement. The injured athlete will be designated inactive until medically able to return and cleared under league procedures. Any replacement must be approved before competing.
Injury Replacement Eligibility Requirements
- Tryout Requirement: Athlete attended a UPL tryout/combine.
- DUPR+ Requirement: Athlete has a DUPR+ free account or Recreation DUPR+ rating established before the season starts.
- League Approval: Replacement must be reviewed and approved by UPL officials prior to participating.
- Roster + Slot Compliance: Replacement may not create a rating/slot advantage and must remain compliant with roster and slot standards.
Forfeits
Failure to Field Minimum Roster
If a team cannot field the minimum roster during competition, the affected game is recorded as a 21-0 forfeit.
Late Arrival & Full Match Forfeit
Teams are expected to arrive on time and be fully match-ready at the scheduled start time. If a team is twenty (20) minutes or more late, the team will forfeit all five (5) games in that match.
The only exception applies if the team proactively communicates with league staff, venue staff, or the opposing team before or during the delay and receives acknowledgment. Without prior communication, the forfeit is automatic. Arrival without communication at 20+ minutes past match time results in a full match forfeit.
Female Player Requirement & Forfeit
Each team is required to have a female player participate in every match, as mandated by lineup rules. If a team does not have a female player present at match start:
- No games may be played until a female player is present.
- No pods may be played out of order to delay or work around the requirement.
- No partial match play is permitted.
If the female player does not arrive within the twenty (20) minute grace period, the team will forfeit all five games in the match. If the team attempts to play without a female player or rearrange play to buy time, the match will be ruled a full forfeit. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Violations and Penalties (Strict Enforcement)
If a team is found in violation of roster, rating, substitutions, roster lock, or slot requirements, the following may apply:
- Automatic Forfeits: Any games played while in violation are automatic forfeits.
- Future Forfeits: Future games may also be forfeited if the team cannot field a compliant roster and lineup.
- League Review: The matter may be reviewed by UPL officials and/or the UPL Rules Committee.
- Discipline: Team may be fined, suspended, and/or removed depending on severity and repeat offenses.
DUPR Account Deletion & Integrity Violation (QBL/UPL)
Effective immediately, any athlete who intentionally deletes or deactivates their DUPR account following a match result, for the purpose of avoiding or manipulating rating outcomes, will be considered in violation of league integrity standards.
- Immediate removal from the team roster.
- Ban from participating in UPL during the following season.
- Formal notification to the team owner.
- Match recorded as a forfeit loss.
- Possible deduction of team points as determined by the Rules Committee.
All violations will be reviewed and confirmed by the Rules Committee. Additional disciplinary action may be applied based on severity or repeated offenses. UPL and QBL operate on verified competition standards. Any attempt to manipulate ratings, records, or results undermines league integrity and will be addressed with strict enforcement.
Uniform Standards
Uniforms Required
Uniforms are required for all teams.
Official Uniform Partner
The official uniform partner of UPL is Leorever.
Customization
Teams are encouraged to customize uniforms with city branding, colors, and sponsor logos while maintaining UPL and Leorever co-branding standards as published.
Regional Pod Play and Championship Path
Teams compete within regional pods (West, Central, East) during the regular season to build rivalries and reduce travel. Top-performing teams advance to the 2026 UPL Championship in Omaha, Nebraska, the official home of the UPL Finals, where the UPL National Champions are crowned.
Team Owners (Responsibilities)
Each Team Owner is responsible for managing communication between players, referees, and league officials; submitting lineups and overseeing match compliance; and ensuring player readiness and adherence to the match schedule. Owners may be active or inactive players but must be present for matches unless the league approves a designated representative.
Owner Conduct & Disciplinary Action
All team owners are required to conduct themselves in accordance with the league's Owner Code of Conduct at all times during match events. The following are prohibited:
- Disrespectful or aggressive banter between owners.
- Screaming, yelling, or disruptive outbursts.
- Derogatory, insulting, or inflammatory comments directed toward any individual.
This behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances, especially when it disrupts match play or reflects negatively on the league, its teams, or its participants.
- Zero-Warning Policy: Violations are subject to immediate enforcement.
- Automatic Fine: Any confirmed violation may result in an automatic fine.
- Rules Committee Review: Owners may be required to appear before the Rules Committee.
- Additional Discipline: Increased fines, suspension, or removal from the league may be imposed.
Coaching, Boundary Calls, and Serve Enforcement
Coaching
Non-playing teammates may provide coaching between points only, as long as it does not delay play or interfere with opponents.
Line Calls
Only active players on court may make boundary and fault rulings during live play. Sideline calls from coaches, teammates, team representatives, or spectators are prohibited. If a sideline individual interferes with line calls or officiating during live play, the point may be awarded to the opposing team at official discretion.
Disputes and Final Authority
Referees or UPL officials may review and make final determinations on disputed calls or rule interpretations.
Drop Serve Rule
Drop serves are permitted and follow the standard rules established by USA Pickleball. While the drop serve removes restrictions on ball release and swing mechanics, all baseline and positioning rules remain fully in effect. A fault is called if:
- The server's foot touches or crosses the baseline before or at the moment of contact.
- The server is standing inside the court when the ball is struck.
- The server fails to maintain proper positioning behind the baseline at contact.
The ball may be dropped from any height and may bounce naturally before being struck. However, the server must remain completely behind the baseline until after contact is made. Any serve executed while the server is on or inside the baseline will be ruled an illegal serve (foot fault).
DUPR Mixed Rating Update
UPL acknowledges the introduction of projected mixed ratings within DUPR 2.0. At this time, UPL will continue using overall DUPR ratings as the primary official standard for league competition, while selectively allowing limited mixed-rating flexibility under approved slot-system rules.
The league will continue evaluating expanded integration of mixed ratings for future seasons, including the 2027 season. UPL reserves the right to modify slot structures, lineup procedures, and roster standards as DUPR systems continue to evolve.
